The Creative Element of Water is one of the hardest to incorporate into home décor. Trickling water from a fountain is loved by most everyone. Here is our solution!
Bryogrow Biophilic Fountains
Living interior arrangements of mosses, lichens and liverworts that utilize flowing water to create and sustain a miniature landscape resembling natural spring ecosystems.
Biophilic decor is the new trend!
Biophilia is the inherent inclination to affiliate with nature. Biophilic design incorporates natural materials, natural light, vegetation, natural views and other experiences of the natural world into the modern built environment. Edward O. Wilson’s book Biophilia (1984) suggests that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connection with nature and other forms of life.
biophilic décor is able to supply the human being’s inborn need of these natural subconscious connections and their vital processes.
Bryogrow biophilic décor pieces contain a naturalistic representation of an established ecosystem and its geometric coherency to support and sustain that ecosystem.
Similarly, biophilic decors strengthen the sociological and psychological component of humanity while connecting the individual to the larger awareness of the Earth’s ecosystem through the care given to the décor.
Bryogrow biophilic indoor fountains are be assembled of simple components but maintain a continuous sustainability and longevity. These small contained ecosystems are excellent for offices and workspaces during the long winter months. They bring a breath of nature indoors with their soothing sounds and earthy aromas. As one cares for and maintains their miniature gardens, it provides stress release and grounding while performing these daily maintenances.
As with any garden, daily observations connect the caretaker their growth and development. This spills over into one personal awareness of the realization of the precious garden of the Earth that we should care and serve.
Construct you own Bryogrow Fountain
Wood Boxes
Each Bryogrow box is individually constructed out of locally reclaimed lumber. This rustic look is rimmed with a stained redwood lip to give it a modern-organic feel and conceal the liner within. The boxes are constructed to fit aluminum waterproof liners that insets into the box.
Liners
Heavy-duty disposable roaster pans are used to contain the water within the box. Please be cautions when moving rock around when accessing the pump so not to puncture the aluminum liner.
We collect and use scraps of heavy-duty mining settling pond liners to serve as a protection from rock piercing through the aluminum bottom. T
Pumps
We use small 3 watt/ 50 gallons per hour submersible pumps.
Stone
Bryogrow Fountains utilize “formation stone” (a.k.a. calcium carbonate tufa), a very porous limestone formed by the precipitation from hot or cold springs with high concentrations calcium carbonate. This particular stone has the unique ability to wick water up through the numerous tubes and crevices. When used in a fountain, it provides the perfect host material for moss and liverworts to attach and grow while maintaining moisture but not becoming waterlogged.
Bryophytes (mosses, lichens, and liverworts)
Bryophytes have the ability to desiccate (dry out) and rehydrate (become moist) without dying. While not all bryophytes share the same degree of this ability, it allows for collection and storage of some species for later use in living floral arrangements.
Our bryophytes are collected on public and private lands in southeastern Idaho with conservation ideals as guidelines. The bryophytes are then horticulturally propagated and selected based on their performances in Bryogrow Fountains and their ease of growth and longevity.
Our intent is to not only to create beautiful living indoor garden fountains, but to introduce and educate others of the abundance and importance of this classification of older less evolved plant life.
Bryogrow Fountains contain LIVE aquatic and terrestrial mosses, lichens and liverworts.
Aquatic Bryophytes are bryophytes that prefer aquatic environments and are found alongside or partially submersed in small creeks and springs. These types prefer a constant supersaturated aquatic environment and are used in Bryogrow Fountains next to the fountain’s water source.
Terrestrial Bryophytes are found on the forest floor of old-growth coniferous forests. These varieties do not tolerate an abundance of water. The optimal solution is to find a happy medium for them to stay hydrated without becoming waterlogged. They serve best growing on raised rocks in the fountains. Moisture moves up the rock and constantly provides a water source that hydrates the mosses.
Care
Water and Light are the central ingredient.
Due to the evaporative surface of the bryophytes, the fountains can transpire up to a quart of water a day. It is imperative that water is added daily to maintain the water level so the pump can operate. This continuous evaporation from the bryophytes serves as an additional humidification of the room in which they inhabit. When relative humidity is low, a fountain can absorb and diffuse a large amount of water per day depending on the size of the arrangement.
Pay close attention to the Bryogrow Fountain and maintain it like you would any garden. Trim and remove dead and decaying portions. Weed out unwanted growth and trim back plants when they become unruly.
