Turquoise

Cu3Al6(PO4)4(OH)8 – 4H20

Turquoise is a hydrous phosphate of copper and aluminum with the chemical formula CuAl₆(PO₄)₄(OH)₈·4H₂O. This composition gives turquoise its unique coloration, typically a striking blue to blue-green, with varying hues depending on its copper and iron content.

Chemical Composition:

  • Copper (Cu): Responsible for turquoise’s blue color.
  • Aluminum (Al): Provides stability to the structure.
  • Phosphorus (P) and Oxygen (O): Found in the phosphate component.
  • Hydroxyl groups (OH) and water (H₂O): Help stabilize the structure and contribute to its specific gravity.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Color: Sky-blue to greenish-blue, influenced by the copper (blue) and iron (more green) content.
  • Hardness: Ranges between 5 and 6 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively soft and susceptible to scratches.
  • Luster: Waxy to subvitreous; sometimes appears more matte depending on the quality and density.
  • Specific Gravity: Generally between 2.6 and 2.9, although it can vary with composition.
  • Crystal System: Typically forms in a triclinic crystal system but rarely occurs in large crystals; usually appears in nodules or as compact, cryptocrystalline masses.
  • Transparency: Opaque, though thinner pieces can sometimes be semi-translucent on the edges.
  • Fracture: Conchoidal to uneven, which is common for minerals in the phosphate class.

Other Notes

  • Stability:

Turquoise is sensitive to heat, chemicals, and sunlight, which can cause discoloration. It also absorbs oils and other substances, which may affect its appearance over time.

  • Porosity: Turquoise can be somewhat porous, leading many pieces to undergo stabilization treatments to enhance durability and polishability.
