The Tree of Life (particularly the Kabbalahlistic approach) is meant to be used as a tool to contemplate the deep mysteries of the creation of the Universe and the development of the Human Soul.
In order to use a tool as a master should, a craftsman must have perfected its used over countless hours of work, study and prayer.
What would happen then, if the young neophyte was given an imperfect tool. One might master the trade of using this tool, but would be disconnected with others of that same trade and possibly never really accepted.
It is imperative that the correct tool be used for the right job. The Tree of Life is a tool such as that. When the tool if correctly made, its purpose is honed and its intent known intimately.
Understanding that, how many versions of this tool have you experienced?
For myself, some of the organizations I patronize, have given me imperfect tools that have led to confusion and frustrations. When approached to ask questions regarding accuracy, responses of adamant denial and lack of inward searching where the excuses given for lazy mindedness and uniformed teachers. I wasn’t asking for the Secrets of the Ancients, I just wanted to study their philosophies. But those teaching we not appropriately informed. When I could get someone to listen to me, they would sit uncomfortably and agree that what I was saying was right. Most likely, they were thinking about all the printing and museum displays that would cost a fortune to redo.
So, take a deep breath . . . I am going to try to unravel the mystery teaching that make up the Tree of Life. I believe this widely know symbol is probably the most misunderstood and misinterpreted teaching within the Mystical Philosophies. My research on the Tree of Life has led me to compile the following information. I present it in hope that it will spawn creative conversations and further unfold its tremendous symbolism to the strong minded seeker.
I’m going to cheat and just Wikipedaia it for some background information. Did some editing.
The tree of life is a diagram used in various mystical traditions. It usually consists of 10 nodes symbolizing different archetypes and 22 lines connecting the nodes. The nodes are often arranged into three columns to represent that they belong to a common category.
The nodes are usually represented as spheres and the lines are usually represented as paths. The nodes usually represent encompassing aspects of existence, God, or the human psyche. The lines usually represent the relationship between the concepts ascribed to the spheres or a symbolic description of the requirements to go from one sphere to another. The nodes are also associated to deities, angels, celestial bodies, values, single colors or combinations of them, and specific numbers. The columns are usually symbolized as pillars. These pillars usually represent different kinds of values, electric charges, or types of ceremonial magic. It is usually referred to as the Kabbalistic tree of life in order to distinguish it from other concepts with the same name. In the Jewish Kabbalah, the nodes are called sephiroth. The diagram is also used by Christian Cabbala, Hermetic Qabalah and Theosophy. The diagram is believed to be derivable from the flower of life.
History and Evolution
Scholars believe that the concept of a tree of life with different spheres encompassing aspects of reality traces its origins back to Assyria in the 9th century BC. The Assyrians also assigned values and specific numbers to their deities similar to those used by the later Jewish Kabbalah. The beginnings of the Jewish Kabbalah are traced back by scholars to the Medieval Age, originating in the Book of Bahir and the Book of Zohar. However, the first historical instance of the modern diagram appeared centuries later in the cover of the Latin translation of Gates of Light in the year 1516. Scholars have traced the origin of the art in the Porta Lucis cover to Johann Reuchlin.
The first historical instance of the modern tree of life was designed by Johann Reuchlin. Paolo Riccio’s son, Hyeronomius, had actively exchanged letters and shared his father’s work with Reuchlin before publication. Thus, in the year 1516, Reuchlin’s diagram came to appear on the cover of the Paolo Riccio’s Latin translation of Joseph Gikatilla’s Gates of Light. The diagram only had 17 paths and, at the time, the concepts of 10 spheres and 22 letters were still distinct in the literature. In 1573, a version sketched by Franciscus Zillettus appeared in Cesare Evoli, De divinis attributis. This version introduced several innovations that would reappear in later versions: all the spheres were of the same size, the lines became wide paths, the spheres were aligned into 3 distinct columns, Malkuth was connected to three spheres, and astrological symbols for the known celestial bodies were used in conjunction with the Hebrew names to label the spheres. However, it also had only 17 paths, albeit distributed differently. Reuchlin’s version was reprinted in Johann Pistorius’ compilation of 1587. Finally, several versions from unknown artists introducing 21 and 22 paths appeared in the posthumous print editions of Moses Cordovero’s Pardes Rimonim between 1592 and 1609. However, the diagrams with 22 paths lacked consistency with each other and none of them had the 22 letters. Between 1652 and 1654, Athanasius Kircher published his own version of the tree in Oedipus Aegyptiacus. Kircher might have designed his diagram in a syncretic attempt to reconcile several distinct ideas. This heavily annotated version, self-termed Sephirotic System, introduced more innovations: abstract concepts, divine names, the 22 Hebrew letters for each path, and new astrological symbols. Between 1677 and 1684, Christian Knorr von Rosenroth published Kabbala Denudat. He designed several new versions of the tree of life, introduced the first version with 11 spheres, placed Daath between Kether and Tiphareth, and attempted to derive the tree of life from elemental geometry.
Consequently, to modern day, two versions are widely circulated: one where Malkuth has 1 path, owing to Reuchlin’s original; and another where Malkuth has three paths, owing to several later versions; both having 22 paths in total, corresponding each to a Hebrew letter, owing to Kircher’s syncretism. With the resurgence of occultism in the 19th century, many new versions appeared, but without major innovations. In the 20th century, Aleister Crowley might have resurfaced the idea of Daath as an 11th hidden sphere between Kether and Tiphareth in his book Liber 777, syncretizing the concept with Kircher’s symbols and von Rosenroth’s diagrams.
With the discovery of new planets, people have tried to introduce more astrological symbols to their own versions of the diagram. As a result, there is no general agreement about the position of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. However, in particular, it has been noted that Pluto bears resemblance with Daath: Pluto is a former planet, the last traditional celestial body to be discovered, and Daath is a hidden sphere, the last to be introduced. In the 21st century, enthusiasts might have rushed to attribute these collaborative works spanning centuries and involving several people through complex interactions to single authors. Thus, sometimes, the version where Malkuth has 3 paths is termed the Tree of Emanation, and the version where Malkuth has 1 path is termed the Tree of Return.
What does all this mean? That there really isn’t a “official” translation and symbolic interpretation of the Kabbalistic depiction of the Tree. There is so many interpretations of is mystical symbolism that it has become very confusing when undergoing study of its meaning. But could there be a more correct version that when correlated with other teachings reinforces it working mechanisms?
I am going to attempt to syncretically build a working theory on how to interpret the “Tree” with how it may illuminate mystical wisdom.
Syncretism /ˈsɪŋkrətɪzəm/ is the combining of different beliefs, while blending practices of various schools of thought. Syncretism involves the merging or assimilation of several originally discrete traditions, especially in the theology and mythology of religion, thus asserting an underlying unity and allowing for an inclusive approach to other faiths.
Trinity
Trinity: Latin: trinus “threefold.” The three parts are:
Singularity of Spirit,
Dualistic Mind/Soul, and
Living Body.
The Christian doctrine of the Trinity is that God is one God, but three coeternal consubstantial persons or hypostases as “one God in three Divine Persons;” The Father, The Holy Spirit, and The Son Jesus Christ. The three Persons are distinct, yet are one “substance, essence or nature.” The New Testament possesses a “triadic” understanding of God and contains a number of Trinitarian formulae.
Alchemy denotes this concept through the symbolism of Sulfur, Mercury, and Salt.
The Primary Colors of additive light (Red, Blue, and Green) combine their essence into the brilliance of White Light. The very manner in which our physical eyes have evolved to see light.
This “Law of three” or the “Law of the Triangle” is the precise manner in which creation was carried out. A prisca theologia of the most ancient origin.
Here are three more examples of how the Trinity comes into daily life. In the Judeo-Christian sense that influences almost everything we experience in our Western Culture, we can see examples of the “Law of Three” in reference to the bible.
The Alchemist believed the laboratory must contain the three aspects to arrive at the sought after goal of Transmutation.
Wouldn’t it then be obvious that the “Tree” contains this triadic formula?
Tree of Life
Matters of the Physical Body
Tree of knowledge of Good and Evil
Matters of the Mind/Soul
Tree of the Sephiroth
Matters of the Spirit
When the three merge, their interconnectedness unfolds mysteries through their correlations.
Sorry, we will not get into sacred geometry in this blog.
I demonstrate above how the three “Trees” become the fruit of life or the triadic expression of the “Trees.”
Have you ever considered that the orientation of the trees might have some relevance. Well, it does and in a huge way. First, let me explain how we get to this bit of wisdom. Each tree has its correspondence to its alchemical essence. And there is a particular way in which each of these is formed out of the Creative Forces. Using the Creative Forces, we can arrive at a polarity. The polarity determines if it should be view Upright or Upside Down. This information will be applied later.
Salt

Mercury

Salt

Using Alchemy and the Creation of the Three Primary Essentials of Sulfur, Mercury and Salt, we can determine their Creative Polarity.
Sepher Yezirah
Much of the information on how we relate to the trees is found in the ancient Kabbalistic text of the Sepher Yetzirah (Book of Formation, or Book of Creation). It is the earliest extant book on Jewish esotericism. Yetzirah is more literally translated as “Formation” because the word Briah is used for “Creation”.
- It is known as a treatise on mathematical and linguistic theory
- The book is traditionally ascribed to the patriarch Abraham.
- Modern scholars have not reached consensus on the question of its origins.
- The objective of the book’s author was to convey in writing how the things of our universe came into existence.
Sepher Yetzirah describes how the universe was created by the “God of Israel” (a list of all of God’s Hebrew names appears in the first sentence of the book) through “32 wondrous ways of wisdom.”
The book describes how God used the 10 sephirot and the 22 Hebrew letters in various combinations, and how It revealed this secret to Abraham as a covenant with him. God’s covenant with Abraham is described as being two-fold:
- Between the 10 toes of the feet is the “covenant of the circumcision” (word: Temporal Law)
- Between the 10 fingers of the hands (identified with the 10 sephirot) is the “covenant of the tongue” (language: Spiritual Law)
The last sentence describes how God “connects” the 22 letters of the Torah to Abraham’s tongue, and reveals its secret to Abraham.
